Adding compost or other organic materials lets your plants access what they need to thrive—even in tricky native conditions.

How much compost should I add?

For most garden beds in the Charleston area, mixing 2–3 inches of compost into the top 6–8 inches of soil is ideal. This improves moisture retention in sandy soils and adds nutrients without overwhelming roots.
If you’re starting a raised bed or reviving tired turf, a bit more may be helpful—but overdoing it can cause nutrient imbalances or drainage issues.

In the Tri-County Lowcountry, poor drainage is common due to clay patches or hardpan soil. If your lawn stays soggy or your garden drowns after every storm, here’s how to fix it:

Aerate and loosen compacted soil

Add organic matter to improve absorption

Build up low areas with compost and topsoil blends

Install a French drain or swale if needed
